Position:                              SUBSTITUTE FOOD SERVICE WORKER/CUSTODIAN

               

Supervisor:                         Principal/Maintenance Supervisor and Food Services Supervisor and/or Food Services Kitchen                                                  Manager

 

General Job Description:              The Substitute Food Service Worker/Custodian provides support in maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, and visitors. The employee may perform custodial, food service, sanitation, facility, and related duties as assigned based on the needs of the school district.  The employee will prepare and serve nutritious and tasteful food for students and school staff; maintain food service areas in accordance with federal, state, and district requirements; and maintain school facilities, grounds, equipment, and common areas in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.  The staff member will uphold the District mission that Dexter Consolidated Schools will nurture a school community focused on continuous improvement where rigorous and relevant learning equips every student for tomorrow’s opportunities.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

 

General Employee Responsibilities:

  13. Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Principal, Maintenance Supervisor, Food Services Supervisor, Kitchen Manager, Director, Superintendent, or Superintendent's designee.

 

Food Service Responsibilities:

  1. Prepare, serve, and assist with food service operations for students and school staff.
  2. Ensure that students receiving breakfast or lunch receive the required portions and food classifications in accordance with federal regulations and district requirements.
  3. Use proper serving equipment to ensure accurate portion sizes.
  4. Attend all required food safety and food service training programs.
  5. Maintain accurate food temperature logs, including cooking, cooling, hot holding, cold holding, and thermometer calibration logs.
  6. When assigned, maintain accurate temperature logs for coolers, freezers, and dry storage.
  7. Maintain accurate sanitizer and other required sanitation logs.
  8. Complete all required food service records, reports, and paperwork accurately and in a timely manner.
  9. Keep kitchen, serving areas, storage areas, and related food service spaces clean, sanitary, neat, and free of trash and clutter.
  10. Follow all HACCP guidelines and established food safety and sanitation procedures.
  11. Maintain a current Food Handler's Card as required.
  12. Assist with receiving, unloading, storing, and putting away grocery and food deliveries.
  13. Assist with recording and maintaining accurate food service inventory.
  14. Notify the Kitchen Manager, Food Services Supervisor, or appropriate administrator of needed repairs, equipment problems, or equipment replacement.
  15. Work cooperatively with Food Service employees, school administrators, secretaries, teachers, staff, students, and visitors to maintain a friendly, courteous, and positive working environment.
  16. Help provide a smooth, safe, and welcoming meal environment for students.
  17. Operate the Point-of-Sale computer system when assigned.
  18. Perform cashier duties when assigned, including accurately collecting and accounting for money from parents, staff, visitors, or others.
  19. Collect tickets or payments for special food-related events, including Thanksgiving Lunch and other district events, when assigned.
  20. Handle money with the highest degree of accuracy and accountability.
  21. Maintain accurate and detailed reports and records.
  22. Properly operate kitchen equipment or demonstrate willingness to learn its safe operation.
  23. Maintain food and non-food supplies in an organized and appropriate manner.
  24. Perform other food service duties as assigned.

Custodial and Facility Responsibilities:

  1. Maintain a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly environment for students, staff, and visitors.
  2. Maintain exterior buildings and grounds so they are free of trash and debris.
  3. Water and care for lawn areas as directed.
  4. Clean and maintain assigned classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, cafeterias, common areas, and other school facilities.
  5. Perform emergency minor repairs and cleaning as necessary.
  6. Report electrical, mechanical, plumbing, structural, or other building problems to the Maintenance Supervisor or appropriate maintenance office.
  7. Order, stock, organize, and maintain adequate levels of custodial and facility supplies as directed.
  8. Maintain assigned uniforms, equipment, tools, and custodial closets in safe, clean, operable, and attractive condition.
  9. Account for supplies, materials, tools, and equipment as required.
  10. Maintain an inventory of basic hand tools needed to accomplish minor repairs.
  11. Install light bulbs as needed.
  12. Shovel snow and perform other seasonal grounds maintenance as required.
  13. Assist with moving furniture, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  14. Maintain building and facility security.
  15. Assume responsibility for building security as directed.
  16. Assist with fire safety and other emergency preparedness procedures.
  17. Maintain a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors.
  18. Respond appropriately to the needs and requests of the Principal and school staff.
  19. Use all cleaning chemicals exactly as directed by product labels and district procedures.
  20. Wear appropriate protective equipment when cleaning body fluids or performing tasks requiring personal protective equipment.
  21. Operate vacuums, buffers, ladders, platforms, hand tools, and other custodial equipment safely.
  22. Complete required custodial records and reports accurately and within established deadlines.
  23. Perform other custodial, maintenance, grounds, and facility duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

  1. Some experience in food service preparation is preferred; quantity cooking experience is desirable.
  2. Custodial or maintenance experience is preferred.
  3. Ability to take direction from supervisors and follow written and verbal instructions.
  4. Ability to work cooperatively with large numbers of students, staff, coworkers, and visitors while maintaining a positive attitude.
  5. Ability to count accurately.
  6. Ability to count and handle money accurately when assigned cashier duties.
  7. Ability to read and write and complete required records and reports accurately.
  8. Must obtain and maintain a current Food Handler's Card within the required time period.
  9. Ability and willingness to learn and safely operate food service, custodial, and maintenance equipment.
  10. Ability to perform food preparation, sanitation, custodial, and facility-related duties.
  11. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  12. Ability to organize and prioritize multiple assignments and responsibilities.
  13. Ability to make sound decisions within the scope of assigned responsibilities.
  14. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

Physical Requirements:

The employee must have the physical capacity to perform assigned food service and custodial duties for the required workday, with reasonable accommodations provided when applicable and when such accommodations do not create an undue hardship upon the District.

Physical requirements may include:

  1. Standing, walking, sitting, driving, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, reaching, lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
  2. Lifting and carrying food, supplies, equipment, furniture, and materials.
  3. Lifting up to 50 pounds in food service activities.
  4. Custodial duties may require occasional lifting from floor to mid-thigh of up to 70 pounds, from mid-thigh to shoulder of up to 60 pounds, and from shoulder to overhead of up to 40 pounds.
  5. Carrying up to 75 pounds occasionally when required.
  6. Any lifting requiring more than 30 pounds of dead weight should be performed by at least two people when possible.
  7. Ability to move furniture and light equipment.
  8. Ability to work overhead and at floor level, including working on knees.
  9. Ability to work in tight or confined areas when required.
  10. Ability to safely work from ladders and platforms.
  11. Full mobility and adequate strength of hands and fingers for operating equipment and handling materials.
  12. Hand/eye coordination and a normal range of sight sufficient to perform assigned duties.
  13. Ability to safely operate vacuums, buffers, kitchen equipment, hand tools, and other job-related equipment.

Safety and Health:

  1. Follow all school safety procedures, including procedures for fire drills, lockdowns, severe weather, emergencies, and other safety situations.
  2. Complete all required safety, food service, and job-related training.
  3. Follow universal hygiene precautions and appropriate procedures for bloodborne pathogens and body fluids.
  4. Use proper posture and lifting techniques to reduce the risk of injury.
  5. Wear protective devices and equipment, including back supports, protective eyewear, non-slip footwear, gloves, or other protective equipment as job conditions require.
  6. Read, understand, and follow precautions and proper methods for handling chemicals, equipment, tools, food products, and other materials.
  7. Follow all HACCP, sanitation, food safety, and district health procedures.
  8. Properly use protective equipment when cleaning body fluids or handling potentially hazardous materials.
  9. Report unsafe conditions, injuries, equipment problems, or hazards to the appropriate supervisor immediately.
  10. Maintain a safe environment for students, staff, and visitors.

Work Environment:

The work environment varies considerably and may include food service areas, kitchens, cafeterias, classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, storage areas, outdoor grounds, and other school facilities.

The employee must be able to work in varying degrees of noise, temperature, air quality, and activity. Job responsibilities may require both indoor and outdoor assignments. Conditions may range from working indoors in comfortable temperatures to working outside in extreme heat or cold.

Interruptions to work are routine, and flexibility, patience, and the ability to adjust priorities are required. The employee may work with large numbers of students, staff, and visitors and may occasionally work under stressful conditions.

The employee may be required to travel between school or district sites as needed. The work schedule may vary based on school and district needs.

The employee must be self-motivated and able to complete assigned duties efficiently with minimal supervision while maintaining communication with the appropriate supervisor.

 

Terms of Employment:

  1. FLSA exempt employee.
  2. Salary and work year to be established by the School Board of Education.
  3. This position necessitates being physically located at the workplace.
